“‘…And I Laughed My Ass Off” – A Sequel to ‘First They Came’ for the MAGA Era”

First, they came for Graydon Carter, a contributor to GQ magazine who first described Donald Trump’s hands as small in an article published in 1984.

And I laughed my ass off because Trump was so offended by this, he ordered his staff to purchase as many copies as they could off of New York newsstands to keep it from public consumption.

Then they came for The Onion, for publishing a satirical op-ed “written” by Trump in 2013 that encouraged the reader to cheer up by reminding themselves that he would be dead in fifteen-to-twenty years.

And I laughed my ass off because Trump was so offended by this, he had his lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen reach out to The Onion to demand its removal, which they ignored. Thirteen years later, I still read this article when I need some levity.

Then, in 2024, they came for Taylor Swift.

And I laughed my ass off because of all the things plaguing him, Trump should have been least concerned about a celebrity endorsement for his opponent. Also, Taylor Swift is one of the most famous, and universally beloved people on the face of the Earth. Which is something Trump aspires for, and genuinely doesn’t know why he can’t possess it.

Then, in 2025, they came for Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert.

And I laughed my ass off because he was providing affirmation, yet again, that humor and ridicule are among the most powerful tools of resistance anyone can implement.

Then, by extension, in 2025 and 2026, they came for me.

And I laughed my ass off because I knew what I had been doing was having the desired effect.
